The church is located in the small square next to the Mariacki Church, right off the Main Square (Rynek Główny). This is a two-aisled building founded in 1338 by Mikolaj Wierzynek. It served as a cemetery chapel and a place of worship for the people of Poland during the middle ages. It was handed over to the Jesuits in 1583. It was remodelled in the Baroque style and housed a famous Jesuit college which competed with the Krakow Jagiellonian University.
The church was rebuilt many times, but the present external form is still Gothic, while the interior is Baroque. Inside the church there is a group of sculptures and many beautiful paintings. Next to the main entrance is the Gethsemane – a complex of stone sculptures which present the Christ with three apostles on the Mount of Olives.
